The CeQur Advisory Board is composed of leaders in the field of diabetes chosen for their expertise, perspectives and empathy for the challenges faced by individuals living with type 2 diabetes.

The board supports CeQur by advising the company on product development, clinical trial design, educational programming for professionals and patients, and other medically-related activities.

Richard S. Beaser, MD,
Medical Executive Director of Professional Education, Joslin Diabetes Center. He is a practicing physician in the Joslin Clinic and Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Beaser received his medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine. He served as a resident in internal medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester, and was a fellow in endocrinology at the Joslin Diabetes Center and at the Lahey Clinic Medical Center. Dr. Beaser has been on the staff of the Joslin Diabetes Center since 1982 and has held numerous past positions at Joslin, including Section Chief of the Adult Diabetology Practice, Medical Director of the Diabetes Treatment Unit, Coordinator of the Patient Education Section, and Medical Director of Joslin TrialNet, a clinical trials network. He has been a clinical research investigator, including involvement in the landmark Diabetes Control and Complications Trial, and has authored four books: Joslin Diabetes Manual, Outsmarting Diabetes, The Joslin Guide to Diabetes, and Joslin's Diabetes Deskbook: A Guide for Primary Care Providers.

William T. Cefalu, MD,
Clinician, researcher, and the director of the NIH Center for the Study of Botanicals and Metabolic Syndrome. He is also the Douglas L. Manship Senior Professor of Diabetes and Chief of the Division of Nutrition and Chronic Diseases at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center. Dr. Cefalu is interested in clinical interventions to improve the metabolic state of individuals with insulin resistance and Type 2 diabetes. Current activities include a research project from the NIH which will examine the clinical effect of chromium on insulin action in type 2 diabetes and potential mechanisms of action, and an assessment of the clinical effect of chromium supplementation on glycemia in type 2 diabetes. Ongoing clinical projects include the effect of an extract of tarralin on glucose control in type 2 diabetes, and the use of inhaled insulin. Dr. Cefalu is widely published on the topic of insulin delivery.

Robert M. Cuddihy, MD,
Medical Director at the International Diabetes Center at Park Nicollet. He served as Chair of Endocrinology at Newton-Wellesley Hospital and attending physician at Massachusetts General Hospital Diabetes Center in Boston, as well as Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. From 1997 until 2003 Dr. Cuddihy was an attending physician at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Mayo Medical School. Dr. Cuddihy received his medical degree from the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He has maintained a special interest in diabetes research, particularly in evaluating new therapies and devices related to caring for individuals with diabetes, quality improvement and practice innovation to improve the quality of care individuals with diabetes receive, and the translation of these new therapies and practice innovations into broad general practice. Dr. Cuddihy is involved in a series of NIH-sponsored clinical trials and has contributed to a variety of publications.

Deborah Hinnen, RN, ARNP, BC-ADM, CDE, FAAN,
Diabetes educator for over thirty years. As a clinical nurse specialist and education coordinator, Ms. Hinnen currently works at Mid America Diabetes Associates as coordinator of a multidisciplinary team, focusing program efforts on a three day comprehensive self-management course that serves nearly 1,000 people with diabetes per year. She is involved extensively with the American Association of Diabetes Educators, having served as their national President from 1993 to 1994, and was awarded their prestigious Distinguished Service Award in 2001. Ms. Hinnen has also served on the National Board of Directors for the American Diabetes Association, and as an editor for Diabetes Spectrum Journal. Her faculty positions are with the Pharmacy of Department at the University of Kansas, and Graduate Nursing Department at Wichita State University and the Physicians Assistant Program at Wichita State. Ms. Hinnen was inducted as a Fellow of American Academy of Nursing in 2003.

Mary L. Johnson, RN, BS, CDE,
Director of Clinical Research at the International Diabetes Center, where testing has occurred on almost every new diabetes medication and device on the market today. She has developed protocols and has served as project director on numerous research trials and co-authored articles and abstracts in the specialty areas of hypertension, cardiology, nephrology and diabetes. Ms. Johnson is a member of the steering committee and a Project Leader for the NIH multi-center study entitled ACCORD, "Action to Control Cardiovascular Risk in Diabetes." She has also had industry experience as a clinical research monitor, ensuring accuracy of data reported to sponsoring companies and adherence to FDA regulations. Ms. Johnson is a member of the American Diabetes Association and speaks on diabetes topics in the local, state and national arena.

Dr. Scott V. Joy, MD, CDE, FACP,
Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine in the Department of Medicine and the Clinical Chief of the Division of General Internal Medicine at Duke University Medical Center. Dr. Joy received his medical degree from University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in Pittsburgh. His postgraduate education included a residency in internal medicine at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh. He is board certified in internal medicine, is a certified diabetes educator, and a fellow of the American College of Physicians. Dr. Joy's research interests include process improvement in diabetes management and education, evaluation of new drug therapies for diabetes, clinical evaluation of postprandial hyperglycemia and applications of technology into clinical practice. He has published articles and abstracts in such publications as Diabetes, Journal of Clinical Outcomes Management, Annals of Pharmacotherapy, Pediatric Hematology and Oncology, Journal of General Internal Medicine, and MD News. He is a member of the Eastern North Carolina American Diabetes Association Leadership Council and is a current member of the state of North Carolina Diabetes Advisory Council.

Virginia Valentine, CNS, BC-ADM, CDE,
Co-owner and CEO of Diabetes Network, Inc., an American Diabetes Association-recognized program. Ms. Valentine is the recipient of the Roche/Zitter Diabetes Disease Management Award, the Outstanding Diabetes Educator of the Year Award, and is also the 2006 recipient of the Distinguished Service Award from the American Association of Diabetes Educators. She received her Master of Science in Nursing degree from the University of Oklahoma College of Nursing. She holds faculty appointments with the University of New Mexico College of Nursing, School of Medicine, and College of Pharmacy. Ms. Valentine is a member of the Advanced Practice Advisory Board to the New Mexico Board of Nursing and serves as Past-President of the New Mexico Leadership Council of the American Diabetes Association. She has published widely on the topic of diabetes for both professionals and patients, including "Diabetes: the New Type 2" (2008, New York: Tarcher/Penguin).
